Be Krsna Conscious 24 hours a day.

After such speculation of many, many births when one is actually wise he surrenders to Krsna. And as soon as he surrenders to Krsna he becomes unaffected by the contamination of maya. This the process. Krsna-arpita mano. No, nothing to think except Krsna. We have got therefore so many engagements from morning, four o’clock upto 10 o’clock. Why so many engagements? Why not make here… Make… Make it a plan? That once in a week let us go and become Krsna conscious. No. You should become Krsna conscious 24 hours then it is possible that maya will not touch you. If you make it official programme, that all right along with other business I shall meditate upon Krsna for half an hour. 15 minutes. For that 15 minutes of course you are uncontaminated but if you, other 24 hours you engage then it is maya. Then what is it? If you burn a matchstick and pour upon it three gallons of water. Oh, how it will burn? [Laughter]. You see? It is useless. Waste of time. You must burn the stick, matchstick and get it more and more blazing. That should be your business. Not that I do it for a moment and pour water. This useless waste of time.

The Teachings Of Lord Buddha

It is a known fact that Lord Buddha appeared 2500 years ago and preached the philosophy of ahimsa (non-violence). What is less known is that a scripture which is 5000 years old already mentions Buddha’s name, name of his mother, place of birth and his mission. This is a very unique presentation compiled by the disciples of His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the most prominent exponent of the Vedic knowledge of the recent times, which shows Buddha’s teachings in the context of the theistic Vedas.

Explaining Deity Worship To Christians

Guest (4): You’ve been hitting on some of the Ten Commandments tonight like “Thou shall not kill.” Now, if you believe the Ten Commandments like that, it also says in there that you shouldn’t worship idols, bow down to idols.
Prabhupada: Yes, we don’t worship idol. We worship God.
Guest (2): Well, we just have a…. We don’t need to discuss.
Prabhupada: Just like here is the picture of God. As you say, this picture is not important, but we say it is important because it is picture of God. Because it is important, therefore you have given the picture.
Guest (3): Well, we say that that picture is important because it’s in commemoration or something of…
Prabhupada: Anyway, you offer some honor. Otherwise why do you give this picture?
Guest (2): Honor, not worship.
Guru-krpa: They put this on the top of their temples.
Guest (2): On one, two of them.
Guru-krpa: I have seen in Salt Lake City.
Guest (2): Salt Lake City and…
Prabhupada: No, no, anywhere, top of…. Here you are giving a particular picture. That means…
Guru-krpa: Gold and silver.
Guest (2): That’s right.
Prabhupada: Stop. That means you have got respect.
Guest (2): We have respect. We do not worship.
Prabhupada: That means that respect is partial. Our process is whomever we respect, we worship him. That is more perfect.

Hear The Guru Not See The Guru

Prabhupada: [indistinct] yes. [Hindi]. [break]
Dictaphone and I am getting an impression. So if I hear about it I can get the same impression. So knowledge about this microphone, either I see or hear — it has the same balance.
Hansadutta: But by, by seeing it…
Prabhupada: Just like suppose if you see some friend that he is such and such. His body is useless. Similarly the same description is given to you, you hear it, so the impression is not the same?
Hansadutta: Yes, some of the time.
Prabhupada: But on the other hand all your senses are imperfect. So any impression you get by these senses they are imperfect. By exercising your senses, whatever knowledge…
Devotee (2): [indistinct]
Prabhupada: Eh?
Hansadutta: Independently.
Prabhupada: Yes. Whatever knowledge you gather that is imperfect. Either you see.. But foolish people they give more stress on seeing. He does not know my seeing is also imperfect. That is his position. He wants to gives stress on seeing but he is ignorant that his seeing power is also defective. What he will do by seeing?
Just like Lord Caitanya when He was in Benares. Benares, Sanatana Gosvami came he asked, “Please give me a host. There is a Vaisnava bring him here.” And Sanatana Gosvami was more than a month, he was walking on the.., On foot. He has no nice dress and there was hair, moustaches. And this Candrasekhara Acarya came back, “Oh I didn’t see any Vaisnava there.” “So there is no man?” “Yes there is a man but he is a… He appears to be a Moslem.” So what is the value of his seeing?
Hansadutta: Yes.
Prabhupada: Caitanya Mahaprabhu is seeing him, Vaisnava. He is seeing him as a Moslem. It’s clear? So what is the father seeing, that hearing is power.., Most important. But Caitanya Mahaprabhu says that he is a Vaisnava. That is most powerful. By seeing he could not understand a Vaisnava. But by hearing he had actual appreciation of Sanatana. But hearing from Caitanya Mahaprabhu, that is the point. Therefore knowledge, hearing from authorized persons is all perfect. Not by seeing, not by touching, not by licking, not by touching. No. Anyway you lose your senses to get real experience, its defect. But if you simply hear from the right authority that is perfect. That is our profit going [?]. Our profit of knowledge therefore perfect.
Devotee (1): [indistinct]
Prabhupada: We are hearing from Krsna — about Krsna. Therefore our knowledge of God is perfect. We are not perfect but our knowledge is perfect because we are hearing from the Supreme Perfect. They do not understand. “So this man is like me imperfect, how he can say, ‘perfect knowledge of Krsna, or God.'” That they cannot understand.

Offenseless Hearing

We have heard of offenseless chanting many times, but is there such a thing as offenseless hearing? Only if we hear properly, we can chant properly. Wouldn’t it be therefore proper to examine how to hear offenselessly?
Out of compassion for the conditioned souls, the great sage Srila Vyasadeva, who is the literary incarnation of the Lord, seeing the imminent coming of the age of Kali wrote down the Vedas. In this degraded age, people will have but short memories and limited brain power to understand spiritual topics and they are no longer spiritually inclined as it was in the previous ages of Satya, Treta and Dvapara. Thus the sage provided the eternal knowledge of the Absolute Truth in a written form for future reference.

1972 Gita Changes Exposed. Part 5: Krsna is Godhead Only Theoretically?

In these series we show various changes found in the 1972 edition of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is and how they change the meaning of Srila Prabhupada’s words. It is understood that while editing, sometimes words are changed for clarity. Therefore, in these series of articles, we try to avoid spending too much time focusing on changes that alter the words with the purpose of giving the intended meaning in the original writing more force. With each change discussed we present the original spoken dictation as recorded by Srila Prabhupada on February the 19-20th 1966, the same passage in the 1972 Macmillan edition and finally our humble commentary.

Therefore Bhagavad-gita should be taken up in a spirit of devotee of Lord Sri Krsna. One should not think that he is equal, on the same level of Sri Krsna, or one should not think that He is an ordinary personality, maybe a very great personality. No. Lord Sri Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So at least theoretically, on the statement of Bhagavad-gita or on the statement, assertion of Arjuna, the person who is trying to understand the Bhagavad-gita, we should accept Sri Krsna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and then, with that submissive spirit… Unless one receives this Bhagavad-gita in a submissive spirit and aural reception, it is very difficult to understand Bhagavad-gita because it is a great mystery.

Introduction to Gitopanisad (Earliest Recording of Srila Prabhupada in the Bhaktivednta Archives) Bhagavad-gita Introduction, New York, February 19-20, 1966.

Therefore Bhagavad-gita should be taken up in a spirit of devotion. One should not think that he is equal to Krsna, nor should he think that Krsna is an ordinary personality or even a very great personality. Lord Sri Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, at least theoretically, according to the statements of Bhagavad-gita or the statements of Arjuna, the person who is trying to understand the Bhagavad-gita. We should therefore at least theoretically accept Sri Krsna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and with that submissive spirit we can understand the Bhagavad-gita. Unless one reads the Bhagavad-gita in a submissive spirit, it is very difficult to understand Bhagavad-gita because it is a great mystery.

Bg-1972: introduction

Here Srila Prabhupada clearly says that Krsna is the supreme personality of Godhead and we should accept this at least theoretically since this is the verdict of the Bhagavad-gita and Arjuna, a person who is trying to understand the Bhagavadgita. The early editors however made it appear that according to the statements of the Bhagavad-gita, Krsna is the Godhead only theoretically. This is a huge discrepancy in the meaning. The conclusion of the Gita is very clear. Nowhere it is said in the Gita that Krsna is the supreme Godhead only theoretically. Why was this passage edited like this?

1972 Gita Changes Exposed. Part 4: Accepted by All Acaryas

INTRODUCTION

Now one may doubt that because Krsna was the friend of Arjuna, therefore he might say all these things to his own friend. But Arjuna, just to drive out this kind of doubts in the mind of the readers of Bhagavad-gita, he establishes his proposition by the authorities. He says that Lord Sri Krsna is accepted as the Supreme Personality of Godhead not only by himself, Arjuna, but He is so accepted by authorities like Narada, Asita, Devala, Vyasa. These personalities are great personalities in distributing the Vedic knowledge. They (are) accepted by all acaryas. Therefore Arjuna says that “Whatever You have spoken so far to me, I accept them as completely perfect.” Sarvam etad rtam manye [Bg. 10.14]. “I take it, I believe it that whatever You have spoken, they are all right. And Your Personality, Your Personality of Godhead, is very difficult to understand. And therefore You cannot be known by even the demigods. You cannot be known even by the demigods.” That means the Supreme Personality Godhead cannot be known even by greater personalities than the human being, and how a human being can understand Sri Krsna without becoming His devotee?

Introduction to Gitopanisad (Earliest Recording of Srila Prabhupada in the Bhaktivednta Archives) Bhagavad-gita Introduction, New York, February 19-20, 1966.

Now one may think that because Krsna was the friend of Arjuna, Arjuna was telling Him all this by way of flattery, but Arjuna, just to drive out this kind of doubt from the minds of the readers of Bhagavad-gita, substantiates these praises in the next verse when he says that Krsna is accepted as the Supreme Personality of Godhead not only by himself but by authorities like the sage Narada, Asita, Devala, Vyasadeva and so on. These are great personalities who distribute the Vedic knowledge as it is accepted by all acaryas. Therefore Arjuna tells Krsna that he accepts whatever He says to be completely perfect. Sarvam etad rtam manye: “I accept everything You say to be true.” Arjuna also says that the personality of the Lord is very difficult to understand and that He cannot be known even by the great demigods. This means that the Lord cannot even be known by personalities greater than human beings. So how can a human being understand Sri Krsna without becoming His devotee?
Bg-1972: introduction
In this section Srila Prabhupada refers to the 10.12-13 sloka, namely:

Arjuna said: You are the Supreme Brahman, the ultimate, the supreme abode and purifier, the Absolute Truth and the eternal divine person. You are the primal God, transcendental and original, and You are the unborn and all-pervading beauty. All the great sages such as Narada, Asita, Devala, and Vyasa proclaim this of You, and now You Yourself are declaring it to me.
Bg 10.12, Bg 10.13, Bg 10.12-13
In the 1972 version, after the great acharyas Narada, Asita, Devala, Vyasadeva are named the editor adds the words “and so on.” Similarly, in the subsequent sentence the meaning is changed from “They are accepted by all acharyas” (“They” meaning Vyasadeva, Narada, Devala, Asita) to “as it is accepted by all acharyas” (“it” meaning the Vedic knowledge). So this is a clear example of subtly changing the meanings of Srila Prabhupada’s words. There are only these four achrayas mentioned by Krsna. There’s no question of “and so on” All other acharyas accept Vyasa, Narada, Asita, Devala as top most authorities. Srila Prabhupada does not speak anything about how the acharyas accept the Vedic knowledge.
The second change in the editing is the edition of “great”. Originally Srila Prabhupada speak of all demigods, but in the 1972 edition it’s only the great demigods who cannoot understand Krsna

Harinam-sankirtan in Gibraltar

Since May the B.L.I.S.S. extended it´s influence to Gibraltar, which is a nice preaching ground with open-minded people and lively streets. Book distribution and chanting of the Maha-mantra – Hare Krishna, Hare Rama – goes on practically daily. Books distributed there travel to all parts of the world as many tourists visit this place. One of the sweet fruits of this endeavor was a featuring in a very prestigious local magazine – Gibraltar Insight with the Fuengirola Deities, Their Lordships Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra on the front cover of the June 2019 Issue. Wish us luck and Lord Krsna´s favor, so this nice program can go on succesfully.

“Please accept my blessings. I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated November 14, 1972, and I have noted the contents with care. Yes, we shall base our preaching work on Lord Caitanya’s formula: sankirtana. After all, He is God, and if He recommends, what is the question of failure? that is not possible. If we simply stick to this programme as I have done it since the beginning, namely, kirtana, preaching, kirtana, distribution of prasadam — if you do like this only that will be sufficient. Of course, you may make the kirtana as nice as possible, with dancing, many kholes, karatalas, conches, and if you preach sincerely, anyone will listen and become convinced. The potency of Krishna Consciousness movement does not come from some outward showing, no, it is the transcendental sound vibration of Hare Krishna Mantra and the words of Bhagavad-Gita, Srimad-Bhagavatam, like that. So now go on and develop the things in this spirit, that will be nice. We are not interested to attract millions of men to see some show. Better we attract one sincere soul to join us in ecstatic chanting and hearing, that will be of real value. And distribute books, as many as possible. If anyone hears something philosophy from us, that will help him. But if he purchases one book that may turn his life. So selling books is the best preaching activity. Sell books, hold the kirtana in public places like schools and colleges, preach — if you practice these things, and try to improve them more and more simply by your practicing sincerely, that simple programme will please Krishna the most and you will see that very soon.

Hoping this will meet you in good health.
Your ever well-wisher,
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

What Is The Matter With The World?

His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

On the 16th of February 1957 a meeting was held at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan to discuss the above subject matter. Distinguished gentlemen from different categories spoke on the subject, but practically nobody could give us a definite direction as to what actually the matter was that was troubling the whole situation.

This feeling of pinching in the existence of our life is a good sign for progress. It is an urge for enquiry what is the wrong in the world that gives us trouble? This trouble is not a new thing but it is a matter of permanent settlement in all the days of life, but it may be felt at different times in different colour. The troubles are in varieties in relation with our mind and body, in relation with our dealings with other living beings and in relation with natural phenomenons.

Why Do We Want The Original Books Of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada?

It is of utmost importance to preserve the teachings of disciplic succesion intact, so that the spiritual medicine of Krsna consciousness remains concentrated and potent to be capable of curing the bhava-roga, material disease of the souls embodied in material nature.

Krsna consciousness, the system of bhakti-yoga, the supermost process and state of spiritual realization was confined in the Vedas, written in Sanskrit language for thousands of years and after the appearance of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, when His disciples, the Goswamis of Vrindavana and other Vaisnavas expounded on His teachings, in Bengali language for hundreds of years. One had to be very fortunate to take his birth in India to be able to take advantage of this divine messages, or he had to learn Sanskrit and Bengali to study the original writings. The first pioneer to change this for the benefit of the whole world was Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, who first started to write on the topics of Krsna consciousness in English language and was the first to send a book on Lord Caitanya´s life and precepts to the Western educational institution, namely the McGill University in Montreal, Canada. His son, the great acarya Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura continued in his effort to expose the proper conclusions of Vedanta to the English-speaking populace of the world and on the order of His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Maharaja, our spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada came to the West, to unlock this long sought after “fountain of youth” of spiritual knowledge, to inundate the whole world with ocean of transcendental nectar that brings about life of eternal knowledge and bliss. He accomplished this great task through the medium of his transcendental books and recorded sound in forms of lectures, conversations, song purports etc. which will circulate around the planet on and on for the next ten thousand years as a crystal-clear guide for those who aspire to make their way back home, back to Godhead.

1972 Gita Changes Exposed. Part 1: Label On the Bottle

It is an understood principle in the Vedic tradition that the words of the spiritual master should not be changed in any way. The guru is not an ordinary man subjected to the four defects of human frailty therefore whatever he writes is perfect. Being in direct connection with Krsna, his words are dictated by the Lord Himself.

Srila Prabhupada in his manifested lila engaged some of his early disciples in the service of editing his manuscripts and transcripts of his dictation tapes. They were to correct the technicalities of the language for clarity and never change any of the intended meanings in his books. Being initiated and therefore somehow already familiar with the philosophy of Krsna consciousness by following  Srila Prabhupada, they would try to understand the meaning from his rough manuscripts or dictations and then present the same meaning in a polished and grammatically correct English. That’s all. Since these early editors could understand Srila Prabhupada’s words in order to do their editing, in no way should Srila Prabhupada’s original words be considered incomplete or incomprehensible. As the early editors could understand, certainly new devotees can also understand, especially now when the full body of Srila Prabhupada’s vani is freely available with lectures, conversations, other books can be also consulted.

INTRODUCTION

Now here is a direction that Bhagavad-gita is especially instructed to Arjuna, the devotee of the Lord, the direct student of Krsna. And not only that, he is intimately in touch with Krsna as friend. Therefore Bhagavad-gita is understood by a person who has similar qualities like Krsna. That means he must be a devotee, he must be in relation, direct relationship with the Lord.

Introduction to Gitopanisad (Earliest Recording of Srila Prabhupada in the Bhaktivednta Archives) Bhagavad-gita Introduction,  New York, February 19-20, 1966.

So we see that Bhagavad-gita is instructed to Arjuna especially because Arjuna was a devotee of the Lord, a direct student of Krsna, and His intimate friend. Therefore Bhagavad-gita is BEST understood by a person who has qualities similar to Arjuna’s. That is to say he must be a devotee in a direct relationship with the Lord.

Secret To Quickly Understand What The Guru Says

If you simply hear and hear in the class of Krsna consciousness, and go outside and forget, oh, that is not nice. That will not make you improve. Then what is? Kirtitavyas ca: “Whatever you are hearing, you should say to others.” That is perfection. Therefore we have established Back to Godhead. The students are allowed, whatever they are hearing, they must be thoughtful and write. Kirtitavyas ca. Not only simply hearing. “Oh, I am hearing for millions of years; still, I cannot understand” — because you do not chant, you do not repeat what you have heard. You have to repeat.

How Swamiji Became Prabhupada.

by Govinda Dasi

A significant thing that happened in Boston was that Swamiji became Srila Prabhupada. Gaurasundar was studying various forms of address in Sanskrit and he learned that “ji” is an affectionate form of address, which was news to us. I was sitting in Srila Prabhupada’s room taking dictation, as I often did, and Gaurasundar, at the doorway, said, “Swamiji, is it okay if I call Govinda dasi ‘Govindaji’?” Swamiji said, “No, ‘ji’ is a third-class form of address. You should not.” I said, “Why are we calling you Swamiji if it’s a third-class form of address?” He said, “It is not very important.” I said, “No, it is very important. What is the best thing we can call you?” Swamiji said, “You could call me Gurudeva or Guru Maharaj or Srila Prabhupada.” I said, “Which of those three is best?” and Swamiji said, “Srila Prabhupada is nice.” I said, “Okay,” and told all the devotees. From that day he was no longer Swamiji but Srila Prabhupada.

(Memories of Srila Prabhupada)

Crows and Tal-fruit Logic

We never had any occasion when we were separated from Krsna. Just like one man is dreaming and he forgets himself. In dream he creates himself in different forms: now I am the king discussing like that. This creation of himself is as seer and subject matter or seen, two things. But as soon as the dream is over, the “seen” disappears. But the seer remains. Now he is in his original position.

Three Types of Birth

A civilized human being has three kinds of births. The first birth is by a pure father and mother, and this birth is called birth by semen. The next birth takes place when one is initiated by the spiritual master, and this birth is called savitra. The third birth, called yajnika, takes place when one is given the opportunity to worship Lord Visnu. Despite the opportunities for attaining such births, even if one gets the life-span of a demigod, if one does not actually engage in the service of the Lord, everything is useless. Similarly, one’s activities may be mundane or spiritual, but they are useless if they are not meant for satisfying the Lord.

Yoga Classes Are Not Yoga

Guest (5): And how does yoga…?

Prabhupāda: Oh, that is not possible for us. Because yoga practice, if you really aim to the perfection of yoga, that is not possible in this age. If you are satisfied simply by some sitting posture and paying the fees, that is your business. You can do that. But it will never get you to the perfectional stage because you are completely unable to perform all the regulation and rules of yoga system. That is not possible. That I have described in many… Yes. So yoga system is very difficult for this age. But if you think that this fractional practice of yoga, a hundredth, one percent… That is not possible to reach to the perfectional stage. The perfectional stage is that if one is perfect in the yoga practice, he shall die at his will. Material laws cannot act upon him. He’ll be practiced to control the inside air in such a way that whenever he thinks fit, that “Now I shall leave my body for such and such planet. I shall go to such and such planet,” the yoga system will help him—if he is perfect. But who is such perfect man in the yoga system? It is not possible.

Guest (2): But there have been yogis in India who have reached that…

Prabhupāda: Yes, yes, yes. But they do not come out. Because the yoga system is to practice in a secluded place alone. It is not a business that you have to open some yoga class and practice it. No. It is… First principle is that he must be alone and in a secluded place, in a sacred place. You see that they are described in the standard yoga śāstra. So they do not come, those who are really achieving perfection. They do not come out to the human society.

Why Are The Original Books Changed?

This short book is a shocking revelation to the community of devotees who assume that the first editions of Srila Prabhupada are without any changes to Srila Prabhupada’s divine words. Makhancora Prabhu through elaborate research work shows us passages that have been changed against Srila Prabhupada’s clear instructions and suggest to re-define what our aim in preserving Srila Prabhupada’s legacy should be. A must read for every devotee who does not want to see Srila Prabhupada’s words being played with.

Why Not Try Deity Worship

There have been many discussions over how to actually perform Deity worship after Srila Prabhupada’s physical departure. This simply compilation serves as a guide to all sincere devotees who want to get the information from the authoritative source of Srila Prabhupada’s direct words. You can’t go wrong by following Srila Prabhupada’s standard. Everything else is questionable.

Easy Journey To Other Planets

As a summary study on the second chapter of Bhagavad-gita this book vividly explains the duality of matter and anti-matter (spirit) and chalks out the path for realization of this truth via the practical process of bhakti-yoga. Also includes an insight to the Vedic cosmology and, written at the end of the 50´s, a prophetical challenge to the supposed moon-landing – a theme which is controversial for decades now. Edited from the original articles published in 1960 issues of Srila Prabhupada´s Back to Godhead magazine.

Who can serve Krsna?

In course of our preaching work, we many times encounter persons with doubts about their ability to take up devotional service to Krsna, especially when they see the procedures in the temple, the devotee looks (shaven heads, robes, tilak etc.) and when they hear about the discipline followed by the devotees, the deep philosophy behind the practice and so on and so forth. Often it becomes „too much“ in their minds.

Seems like a completely different world. And it indeed is a different world. It´s the spiritual world, but now we are encaged in this world of material forms and procedures. So how can one come to the platform of connecting with the Absolute Truth, how can one achieve that perfection of yoga? It may seem like an insoluble difficulty, to come out of our common ways and take to the path of bhakti. But is it so? Is it really so difficult? What is actually required?

The thing here is, that nowadays people in general are superficial. They let themselves to be guided by their eyes without hearing patiently and sufficiently, what to speak of pondering over what was heard. They come, they SEE and they go. They see these strange guys bowing down to pictures, ringing bells, speaking some freaky language and smashing their cherished ideas. „This brainwash is not for me.“
